I remember when my wife first came to me with the article from the Columbus Dispatch. It read that there was a Golden Retriever puppy available, south of Columbus, close to our hometown of Chillicothe, OH.
She wanted the puppy.
I dug my heels in and said “NO.”
She dug her heels in and said she wouldn’t speak to me anymore.
And that’s how it all began.
A couple of hours passed and I soon came to the realization that I’d rather speak to my wife and “deal” with this new dog than to never speak to my wife again.
In all fairness to her, she wouldn’t have given up on us over a puppy…or, at least that’s what I tell myself.
Anyway – we got the dog. We named him Gary, then we changed it to Lou. And, boy oh boy, Lou was a nightmare.
He chewed up all the carpet in our small apartment. He contracted some sort of inflammatory bowel disease and went number two on just about everything we owned. He liked to get into EVERYTHING. Think Marley & Me. On steroids.
And so I resented Lou.
And continued to resent him.
A couple years ago, though…something happened. I looked down at Lou and he was sitting there, wagging his tail, tongue hanging out. I’d thought back to all the times I’d spent taking him outside, taking him on walks, rushing him to the vet ER when he wolfed his food down too fast, spent time fixing his food from raw chicken and rice so he could actually stomach a meal…as I was reflecting on those things, it hit me.
Second to my wife and son, this dog has taught me more about unconditional love than anyone on the face of the earth.
He’s gearing up for his 10th birthday. He’s got a tumor growing. He has epilepsy. We’re not sure how much time he has left, but I do know this: I’m going to give him every ounce of love I’ve got left.
He taught me to do so.
