These days we use our phones for anything and everything. There is just
about an app for everything you could ever think of. Right now the number one
accessory is a smartphone, so why should being abroad prevent you from using
your smart phone? Here are some tips on how to avoid racking up your bill while
you are abroad from Lisa Miller at The Huffington post.
Unlock your smart phone and purchase an international SIM card. This will
allow you to use a SIM card form any provider around the world. If you want more
of a conventional phone plan, then you should try T-Mobil’s “Simple Choice” plan.
The plan includes unlimited texting and data in over 120 countries for only $50 per month with no annual service contract.
Use Wi-Fi as much as possible! If you are having trouble finding a place with free Wi-Fi or just Wi-Fi in general try using apps like Free Wi-Fi finder. If you cannot find Wi-Fi offline maps will save your data. Apps like City Maps 2Go and OsmAnd, or cache your own offline maps in Google Maps. To cache a map all you have to do is zoom in on the area you want to save and type “OK Maps” into the search bar, and press the “search” icon.
Put your phone on airplane mode, it will help your data and your battery. By having your phone on airplane mode it will endure that your apps wont be using any of your data. Use free apps like Google Voice, WhatsApp, Skype, Facetime and Facebook Messenger to connect with your friends and family around the world.
Set a data limit on your phone so you can keep tabs on how much you are using and how much you have left. Make sure to download any and all apps you need for your travels before you get on the airplane. Take a screenshots of your travel information, so if you need to check a flight time or hotel address you can do without using data.
There are a lot of helpful apps out there for all you worldly travelers, try these ones to start out with, Google Translate, Yelp and TripIt.
